Microsoft yesterday defended its stake in software company Corel, saying the deal would allow the Ottawa-based firm to continue producing software for non-Windows operating systems.

Before Mr Bill Clinton's departure last month the Justice Department's antitrust investigators asked it to produce documents relating to its $135 million (€146 million) investment in the Canadian company. A Justice Department spokesman yesterday confirmed the antitrust division had opened an inquiry.
