The Government has approved proposals for draft legislation from the Minister for Finance, Mr Charlie McCreevy, to allow the introduction of mortgage and public credit bonds similar in nature to the German Pfandbrief in the Irish market.

The news will be welcomed by lenders as the bonds will allow them raise funds at cheaper rates than they can at present.
