Shares fell from record highs, following Wall Street down amid signs the crisis in Asian markets was worsening. The Xetra DAX extended early losses after closing at a record 5,799.22 on Wednesday. The market was closed on Thursday for a public holiday.

French stocks extended their opening losses on Wall Street's drop and worries about Asia. "There certainly are worries about what's going on in Asia, but the market wasn't in a panic," one French share trader said.

Italian shares continued to show losses, in line with the rest of Europe, after US stocks opened weaker amid concerns that a recession in Japan could impact on US corporate earnings.
