The Irish market closed marginally higher in thin trading, although CRH suffered from profit taking and lost 6p to 442p. The heavy trading in Golden Vale eased and the share was unchanged on 73p.

In London most of the leading stocks drifted back in relatively light trading, which appeared to ignore the latest takeover developments in the British utilities sector.
