Irish mobile phone users were the first in the world to be able to shop using their handsets, Esat Digifone said yesterday

Irish mobile phone users were the first in the world to be able to shop using their handsets, Esat Digifone said yesterday. It said its WAP - or Internet service for mobile phones - now permits customers to buy flowers, wine and chocolates online.

The company's chief executive, Mr Barry Maloney, said the move represented "the world's first online WAP shopping service", and predicted that mobile users would increasingly use their phones to make purchases.
