Stocks closed with mixed results yesterday as investors once again embraced technology stocks while shunning the broader market. Concerns about a third interest rate rise this year held blue chip stocks lower.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average dropped 19.58 to 10,597.74. Broader stock indicators were mostly higher. The Standard and Poor's 500 rose 8.18 to 1,373.46, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 25.82 to 3,150.86. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by an eight-to-seven margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,647 down, 1,418 up and 496 unchanged.
NYSE volume totalled 981.28 million shares at the close against 848.68 million in the previous session. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 2.44 to 448.72.
