Britain has said it will allow the country's dominant telephone company British Telecommunications to provide nationwide broadcasting services from 2001, lifting regulatory shackles one year earlier than expected.

Trade and Industry Minister, Ms Margaret Beckett, said BT and other national operators would also be immediately free to broadcast entertainment services to the 17 per cent of British homes outside cable franchise areas.
