US computer company ACT is to make 90 of its 146 staff redundant in Dublin as part of a restructuring move to cut costs because of the downturn in the global tech sector.

ACT, a unit of US computer company ACT Inc, will close the manufacturing side of its business based in Citywest industrial estate in Dublin but will retain its high-end service facility which employs 56 staff.

Meanwhile, a further 40 jobs are to be lost at Nortel's Galway and Shannon facilities as part of the Canadian telecoms group's plans, announced in June, to cut a further 10,000 employees worldwide. Yesterday's announcement comes on top of 40 job cuts made at the Galway plant in February, as part of an earlier plan to cut 20,000 jobs across the Canadian telecoms group's global operations.
