The shortlist covers 26 awards ranging from sustainability and green issues to innovation and design. All the specialist skills, from architecture through the use of technology to health and safety, get a gong and everyone from apprentices to contractors, consultants and project managers is recognised. Projects include domestic, international, industrial and civic works.
One of the co-ordinating judges is Daniel Clarke Hagan, programme chair for construction project management at Sligo’s Atlantic Technological University (ATU). In his second year as a judge, Clarke Hagan says: “Entrants had put in a lot of time and effort to include illustrations, photographs and other evidence to demonstrate their claims. All the entrants were of a very high standard and everyone who got shortlisted has demonstrated excellence.”
Each independent judge scored candidates based on agreed category judging criteria. These were then amalgamated and averaged to produce the final shortlist. Judges will now be allocated individual categories and go through the shortlisted entrants with a fine-tooth comb to decide the winners.
Clarke Hagan says: “The hardest part for me was when there were individuals to be judged and there was such a high calibre of entrants and not all can be shortlisted. I do feel for those not shortlisted but it is done fairly and we judged the criteria not the person.”

The winners will be announced in front of a sold-out audience at the gala awards on Thursday 2 November at The Mansion House, Dublin, where an audience of 500 construction professionals will cheer on the winners.
Previous winner Bennett Construction, which was crowned contractor of the year for 2022, explained how much winning meant. Paul Bruton, joint managing director, said: “We were delighted to be awarded the contractor of the year award from the ICIA. Given that the panel of judges were from such a wide range of sectors, demonstrates the standing to which Bennetts are regarded in the wider public, construction and academic sectors. Having offices in the UK, it also provides a clear demonstration of our abilities and industry standing, one which we utilise when talking to current and potential client groups.”
Brendan Mitchell, regional director at one of the awards main sponsors, Meinhardt Ireland, said: “We are delighted to sponsor the Irish Construction Industry Awards 2023, especially the inaugural contractor residential project of the year award. This category highlights exceptional residential construction from the past year and offers a prime opportunity for us to promote our Irish services to key decision-makers in our industry.”
Kevin O’Driscoll, director partnership programmes at the awards’ organiser Business River said: “Events like this are made possible through the support of sponsors. We are thankful to our 2023 sponsors and professional partners, which include Considerate Constructors Scheme, MMC Ireland, Globoserv, Lumen Search, Alucraft, Williaam Cox, Tech Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, ORS, KSN Horizon, Industry Training Services, U-Value Insulation, Boon Edam, and Meinhardt Ireland. Their investment in the awards underlines their commitment and support of this key business area.”
The Irish Construction Industry Awards started in 2014 with just 13 categories and the event has grown to 28 awards this year, with 26 categories plus an overall winner and a leader of the year prize.
