Ipswich's rich European traditions were enhanced in Moscow as George Burley's side recorded a famous victory. Second-half goals from Finidi George and Marcus Stewart, from the penalty spot, helped the 1981 UEFA Cup-winning club to a 3-2 aggregate win in the same competition in the Russian capital.
As a result, they ensured it is the end of the beginning of a European campaign 19 years after their last.
In truth, they were grateful to birthday boy Dmitry Vyazmikin, who later pulled one back, when the Torpedo striker somehow failed to convert in front of an open goal.
Following a chanceless first half, and just 45 minutes from a European exit, the Suffolk side changed the face of the tie just seconds after the interval, when George volleyed in. The Nigerian winger, who forced a corner on the right, tucked the ball under Berezovsky at the far post after Jamie Clapham headed onto the back of Stewart from a Mark Venus delivery.
Ipswich were suddenly in control of their destiny again with their one-goal advantage, and things got even better when French referee Pascal Garibian spotted Andrei Malai pulling George's shirt in the box.
Stewart, who missed from 12 yards in the first leg, this time stroked the ball past Berezovsky's dive and inside the goalkeeper's right-hand post. That meant Torpedo had to score three times to go through and the hosts upped their pressure immediately.
Viacheslav Daev and substitute Andrey Gashkin both went close before the Russians pulled a goal back through Vyazmikin. Konstantin Zyryanov released the striker, who ran clear and beat the onrushing Matteo Sereni.
But, ultimately, his miss midway through the first period, to the shock of the 8,000 or so Torpedo fans in the giant 80,000-capacity Luzhniki Stadium, cost the Russians.
Torpedo, currently fifth in the Russian league, should have been ahead when Shirko and Vyasmikin were allowed to go on despite looking offside. The former squared for last week's scorer in Suffolk, who inexplicably hit the bar from six yards with Blues goalkeeper Sereni stumbling in front of an exposed net.
Shirko then shot into the side netting seconds later.
