Tipperary ring the changes for Cork

Tipperary make seven changes for Saturday's top-of-the-table clash with old rivals Cork in Thurles.

Division One B leaders have already qualified for phase two and are protecting a 100 per cent record against the second-placed team who have almost certainly qualified with them.

A week ago Tipperary's latest win against Derry was achieved with a team weakened by injuries but manager Michael Doyle has been able to restore most of his first-choice players for Saturday.

Brendan Cummins, John Devane, Eamonn Corcoran, Aidan Butler, Tommy Dunne, Conor Glesson and Mark O'Leary return at the expense of Justin Cottrell, Tomas Costello, Richie Flannery, David Kennedy, John Carroll, John O'Brien and Eugene O'Neill.

Tipperary won the league two years ago and will be favourites to top the division by the end of phase two and qualify for the final in May.

Meanwhile, Doyle's predecessor Nicholas English is in the news with his appointment to spearhead a development programme in Dublin hurling.

Intended to identify talented hurlers in secondary schools and provide them with specialist coaching, the scheme will be administered by specially-tutored coaches drawn from third-level colleges.

English will tutor the coaches in the necessary techniques and the programme begins next month.

Also on the agenda in the county is the new post of Director of Hurling.

Interviews were conducted a week ago and an announcement is expected soon. Although associated with the appointment, English did not apply.

The GAA yesterday announced details of a new football-coaching programme aimed at boys and girls in fifth and sixth class in primary schools all over Ireland, North and South.

Catch and Kick, which is sponsored by McDonalds the fast food franchise, will provide schools and clubs with the necessary equipment and materials to develop catching and kicking techniques.

Over 3000 schools and clubs have been provided with free footballs, pumps, bibs, cones and kit bags as well as coaching manuals, score charts and assessment guides.

Primary schools will combine with their local clubs between now and the end of the year to ensure that each school is provided with a minimum of 16 quality coaching sessions.

Fun blitzes will be organised with a view to maximising the level of enjoyment and competitive involvement provided for all participants.

These blitzes will be organised on a seven-a-side basis and the intention is that all players will participate for the full duration of each game. In other words, there will be no substitutions and no emphasis on the end result or maintaining league tables.

A national Catch and Kick Challenge will be organised for children in their final two years of primary school.

The purpose of this is to challenge children to practise their catching and kicking skills. Skills challenge exhibitions will take place in Croke Park, in conjunction with senior inter-county matches during the summer.

Meanwhile, Limerick will be missing four regulars for the visit of Derry to Kilmallock, in Division One B of the NHL, on Saturday.

Thirty-one-year-old corner back Steve McDonogh is to marry county camogie star Kay Sheehan on the same afternoon. Brian Geary and Ollie Moran are both carrying injuries whereas Clem Smith has work commitments.
