The 30th Irish intercounty surfing championships take place in Rossnowlagh, Co Donegal, this weekend and will feature a number of "oldies" teams who competed when the sport was in its infancy here.

To mark the occasion, a number of American and Australian professionals are putting on a surfing exhibition at either Bundoran or Rossnowlagh beach (further information available at 072 41223).

Twenty counties are hoping to strip current holders Leitrim of the title, with Sligo and Waterford expected to emerge as serious contenders.

Meanwhile, the Irish team are making final preparations for the World Championships, which this year are being staged in Portugal, from October 22nd to November 2nd.
