Teddy Sheringham will rejoin Tottenham on a free transfer after deciding to leave Manchester United when his contract expires this summer.

The 35-year-old striker, who was recently voted player of the year for his contribution to United's seventh league title in nine seasons, is likely to close the deal early next month after England's game in Greece.

Sheringham spent five years at White Hart Lane from 1992, scoring 76 goals in 166 league games, before moving to Old Trafford for £3.5 million. He is known to be a great admirer of the Tottenham manager Glenn Hoddle, under whom he played regularly for England.

Meanwhile, Czech Republic striker Jan Koller is expected in London this week to finalise his £8 million move from Anderlecht to Fulham, who seem unlikely to pursue an interest in the Chelsea midfielder Gustavo Poyet . . . Charlton have completed the £2 million signing of the South Africa captain Shaun Bartlett from Zurich . . . Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has been ordered to take six weeks of complete rest after revealing that he played the last two months of the season with a painful stomach injury . . . Arsenal's Patrick Vieira has been named player of the year by Premiership sponsors Carling.
