JOHN SHERIDAN, the Republic of Ireland midfielder, expects to know today if he will be continuing his career with Bolton Wanderers.

The temporary transfer, which took Sheridan from Sheffield Wednesday to Bolton, expires at midday and the clubs are expected to enter into discussions about a more permanent arrangement.

"It's now a matter for the clubs to agree a fee and if that is done, I will then be talking with Bolton," he said.

"Providing the terms are right, I would be happy to stay at Burden Park. Bolton play a style of football which suits me and I think the move could be a good one far my career."

It is now almost a year since he made his last appearance in the national team, in the European championship play-off against Holland at Anfield but he has not abandoned hope of returning for the concluding stages of the World Cup campaign.

"Every manager has his own ideas of how he likes his team to play and the people he wants in it," he said. "So far, Mick McCarthy has not called me up but among other things, that is down to the fact that I was not playing regularly for Sheffield Wednesday.

"Regular club football is essential for anybody with hopes of playing at international level and to that extent, 3 move to Bolton could help."

Mick McCarthy, accompanied by his assistant, Ian Evans, is off to Macedonia tomorrow to watch their World Cup game against Romania on Saturday. He also plans to take in the uader-21 meeting of the countries on Friday evening.

Steve Carr, the young Dubliner who has made such a big impact with Tottenham this season, is on the verge of signing a new contract with the club. The likelihood is that he will be offered a deal which will keep him at the club until the year 2001.
