Several Perceptions, by Angela Carter (Virago, £6.99 in UK)

First published in 1968, this is Carter's third book and although it won a prize and confirms that her linguistic confidence and energy were evident from the outset, it is slight fare indeed. Joseph, the hapless hippy hero, has lost his girlfriend and is now lusting after his pal's life weary prostitute mother. Meanwhile, a damaged young girl limps into the frame. It is a good thing she does, as she rescues gloomy Joseph from an abrupt leave taking. Several caricatures which would in time become stock Carter players feature, and the irritatingly knowing tone is often a barrier between her and her readers. It all takes place in an atmosphere close to fairytale, a specialist interest of Carter's. Though of archive value, this one is forgettable.
