September Road: Galway v Tipperary - The modern rivalry

1987: All-Ireland semi-final

1987: All-Ireland semi-final

Galway 3-20, Tipperary 2-17.

Having being beaten in the 1985 and '86 finals, Galway were in no mood to buy in to the Tipperary revival spirit that saw the county in Croke Park for the first time since 1971.

Points from Joe Cooney and Steve Mahon brought Galway level late on before goals from ╔anna Ryan and substitute Noel Lane put Galway out of sight.

1988: All-Ireland final

Galway 1-15, Tipperary 0-14.

A tense decider with an even tenser finish. With only two minutes remaining and Galway two points in front, John Commins managed to turn away Cormac Bonnar's shot from close range. Within in a minute, substitute Noel Lane buried a ground shot past Ken Hogan for the game's only goal.

Quote of the day: "We were not too cocky. We know too much about Galway hurling to make a mistake about that."

- Babs Keating

1989: All-Ireland semi-final

Tipperary 1-17, Galway 2-11.

An encounter dominated beforehand by the Tony Keady affair that had seen the Galway centre back suspended for playing illegally in America and afterwards by the spite and nastiness that dominated the game itself, Galway's sense of injustice over Keady spilling into bitterness.

Sylvie Linnane got the line after striking Nicky English, while Michael McGrath was shown red with 10 minutes remaining after a charge on Tipp full back Conor O'Donovan.

Some afters - between McGrath, as he was leaving the field, and John Leahy - didn't enhance the memory of the game.

Quote of the day: "You can't play against 16 players."

- Cyril Farrell on referee John Denton.

1991: All-Ireland semi-final

Tipperary 3-13, Galway 1-9.

With the great Galway team of the era in decline and Tipperary in their pomp, the biggest win of the modern era followed. Tipperary's scoring honours went to Michael Cleary, who chipped in 1-9, while Declan Ryan and Cormac Bonnar each scored goals.

Peter Finnerty, converted to full back, had a difficult afternoon.

Quotes of the day: "Did I look happy?"

- Finnerty on the full back experiment.

1993 All-Ireland semi-final

Galway 1-16, Tipperary 1-14.

The beginning of the end for the Babs Keating era and Nick English's playing career too. Strong favourites after their Munster final dismantling of Clare, Tipperary misfired and the two-point margin didn't reflect the gap between the sides, Pat Fox's late goal putting a gloss on the scoreline.

Quote of the day: "We heard people say things, heard Babs saying things, like hurling needs a Tipp-Kilkenny final. That perked me up to hear them say that."

TIPPERARY: K Hogan; P Delaney, N Sheehy, M Ryan; R Ryan, B Ryan, Conal Bonnar; D Carr (0-1), Colm Bonnar; M Cleary (0-8, seven frees), D Ryan 0-1, J Leahy (0-1); A Ryan (0-1), A Crosse (0-1), N English (0-1). Subs: C Stakelum for D Ryan, P Fox (1-0) for Colm Bonnar, M O'Meara for D Ryan.

2000: All-Ireland quarter-final

Galway 1-14, Tipperary 0-15.

Galway's first championship win since '93 in a compelling game. Injuries to Eamonn Corcoran and John Leahy, just getting into top gear, didn't help Tipperary's cause, but Galway came good in the final quarter, with Joe Rabbitte lording it and Mattie Murphy's team outscoring Nicky English's team by four points to one in the final 20 minutes.

Quote of the day: "We got a break today, we haven't been getting them for a couple of years."
