Rugby player Ryan Tandy found dead in Australia

Tributes have poured in for former Hull KR and Ireland Rugby League forward Ryan Tandy, who has died in Australia at the age of 32, reportedly after a drug overdose.

Tandy represented Ireland at the 2008 World Cup, playing a key role as Andy Kelly's men topped their group before being eliminated in the knockout stages by Fiji, but his career was later ended in disgrace after he was convicted of match-fixing.

Tandy played for the Robins during the 2007 Super League season, making 12 appearances in total, while he also had spells with Widnes and Whitehaven.

A statement on Rugby League Ireland's official website said: "Rugby League Ireland would like to pass on our condolences to the family and friends of Ryan Tandy who sadly passed away today in Saratoga, Australia.

“Ryan was a larger than life character and we would like to express our thanks for the commitment during the World Cup.”

Tandy's career ended after he was convicted of match-fixing while playing for Canterbury Bulldogs against North Queensland in 2010, with the NRL banning him for life.

Hull KR said in a statement: “The club are shocked and saddened by the news of the death of former player Ryan Tandy.

"Ryan served Hull Kingston Rovers with distinction during his time with the club and our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time."

A Widnes spokesman said: “Widnes Vikings are saddened to hear the news of the death of former Vikings player Ryan Tandy. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”
