Trinity student James Pringle underlined the significance of his return to senior open competition with a surprise win over David Mullins, seeded three, in the quarter-finals of the Leinster Open tennis championships at Lansdowne last evening.

Pringle's game was very much back in groove. The Dundalk player always seemed determined to re-launch his career and get among the last four, this time from the fifth-seeded spot.

Top seed Owen Casey claimed the scalp of Joe Green. Casey played his shots with confidence for a 6-2, 6-1 win.

Cork's Yvonne Flynn was held up by Lisa O'Shea, but got through 6-4, 7-6.
