Kellie Harrington has already guaranteed herself at least a bronze medal in women’s lightweight boxing but the Portland Row boxer doesn’t want to leave with anything less than gold. As the number one seed in the division she may well do that but this semi-final bout against Sudaporn Seesondee of Thailand (6am) will be a step up. Win and it’s a guaranteed silver and a place in Sunday morning’s final.

Before that, Stephanie Meadow and Leona Maguire get the Irish action underway for the day in the women’s golf. Meadow will begin at one over par while Maguire is level par with Madelen Sagstrom holding the first round lead at five under.

Tanya Watson made history on Wednesday by becoming the first Irish woman to compete at an Olympic diving event and she did it with aplomb by finishing 16th in the preliminaries to reach the semi-final (2am). From there the top-12 will qualify for the final which takes place later in the morning at 7am.

In the modern pentathlon this will be Natalya Coyle’s third Olympic Games and the Meath athlete is coming in all guns blazing. She gets underway in the fencing ranking round at 5am.

Later in the morning it’s time for track cycling as Mark Downey gets underway in the men’s omnium. First up for them is the scratch race at 7.30am.

In athletics there are five Irish competitors in action on Thursday with David Kenny and Alex Wright going in the men’s 20km walk at 8.30am before Andrew Coscoran races in the men’s 1,500m semi-finals at 12pm. Round off the day then is the men’s 50km walk which begins at 9.30pm and will include Brendan Boyce and Alex Wright.

What else is on?

It’s a busy day around the Games with a number of finals in track and field. The men’s 110m hurdles takes centre stage at 3.55am while the women’s pole vault final begins at 11am and the men’s 400m final is at 1pm.

The two-day heptathlon also comes to a close with the long jump (1.40am), javelin (4.35am) and the last event, the 800m (1.20pm).

At 11am the men’s hockey final takes place between Australia and Belgium.
