NUIG wrap up contest with second-half goals

SIGERSON CUP NUIG 3-11 Sligo IT 0-10:GOALS BY NUIG's Fiacra Deasmhunhaigh and Jason Doherty in the 40th and 48th minutes respectively ended this round one game as a contest at the I T grounds, Ballinode, yesterday.

Sligo IT opened the scoring with an Adrian Croal point after two minutes before Aidan Mullin levelled a minute later after a shot by Deasmhunhaigh came back off the post. Five unanswered points by the impressive visitors in a blistering seven minutes spell set the Galway college for an 0-8 to 0-7 interval lead.

Danny Cummins missed a goal chance for the Sligo IT in the 23rd minute when they trailed by just one point.

The home side were reduced to 14 men then Eugene Keating was shown a straight red card for striking with his arm five minutes into the second half.

The Galway college used the extra player to good effect during the remainder of the half with Mayo’s Peadar Gardiner, who impressed throughout, putting the icing on the cake with a third goal in the closing stages.
