Butch James, the talented if volatile South African international, had an appeal against an eight-week suspension (two of which were suspended) for foul play turned down. James was found guilty of reckless play and for playing an opponent without the ball following the Natal Sharks-Cheetahs Currie Cup match. He was originally suspended for eight weeks and ordered to submit to counselling by the Natal rugby union.

James has incurred the wrath of several international coaches for his overly aggressive tackling, that is more body check or shoulder charge than tackle. He has previously stated he was working on his technique, but obviously not hard enough. The appeal hearing agreed his suspension would remain but that James would not have to undergo counselling as the South African Rugby Football Union's (SARFU) do not provide for such a sanction. James is recovering from a knee operation that could keep him out six to eight months.
