Nemo ride out revival to register comfortable passage

Nemo Rangers ... 0-16 Kerins O'Rahilly's ... 1-7: Nemo Rangers dismissed the challenge of Kerry champions Kerins O'Rahilly's with consummate ease at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney, yesterday. It was a victory for the craft and experience of Nemo, who were in a different class to O'Rahilly's, who only two weeks previously had captured their first county title for 45 years.

Nemo dominated midfield throughout, where man of the match Kevin Cahill and Derek Kavanagh were completely dominant. Nemo's lively wing forward Alan Cronin also led the O'Rahilly's defence a merry dance, but his poor finishing let the Kerry side off the hook.

Nemo were winning all the breaks around the middle, and with half backs Gary Murphy and Martin Cronin surging forward O'Rahilly's spent most of the afternoon on the back foot. Colin Corkery did not have to over-exert himself and his marker, Barry O'Shea, was only beaten once, though Corkery knocked over five points, including two fine efforts from play, before retiring with a leg injury in the 43rd minute.

At the other end, Declan Quill had to live on crumbs of possession but kicked five points. However, he never got enough ball to be a real threat to Nemo.

To add to O'Rahilly's woe, their corner forward reacted to a holding foul late on and was red carded by Paddy Russell.

Nemo raced 0-3 to 0-0 ahead inside seven minutes thanks to points from Cronin, Derek Kavanagh and a superb William Morgan effort. O'Rahilly's then enjoyed their best spell and two superb points by Quill, one a 45 and the other a sideline ball, plus a beauty from John O'Connor, had the sides level by the 12th minute, but that was as good as it got for the Kerry side.

Nemo took over and five unanswered points, including three from Corkery, gave the Cork side an 0-9 to 0-4 lead at the interval.

After the break, two quick frees from Corkery put Nemo further in the clear, but O'Rahilly's rallied to their credit, thanks to the O'Shea brothers, Morgan and Barry, along with Gareth Walsh. Quill contributed two further points from play and when, in the 48th minute, Barry O'Shea found brother Morgan inside the Nemo defence, Cronin gave away a penalty. Gareth Walsh drilled the placed ball to the roof of the net to leave the score 0 -11 to 1-6 and the Kerry champions very much in contention.

Any hopes of a Rahilly's revival were dashed as Nemo upped their game and added five points in the closing stages, with substitute James Masters getting three as the Cork champions cruised to another Munster final, which will probably be at the same venue in two weeks.
