Alfred Dunhill Report: Rory McIlroy's bid for more world rankings points failed to yield dividends today after the teenager missed the halfway cut at the Alfred Dunhill Championship. A level par round of 72 was not enough to maintain the 19-year-old's involvement over the weekend as he missed out by a single stroke.
While unlikely to see him fall out of the world's top 50 (he is currently 49th), McIlroy will now be hoping for a better performance at next week's South African Open as he looks to secure a berth in next season's US Masters.
McIlroy could only manage a level par 72 in today's erratic second round. His card contained no less than six birdies but the good work was unravelled by four bogeys and a double bogey at the par four 14th as he finished on one-under.
McIlroy's former Walker Cup team-mate Jonathan Caldwell and Damien McGrane head the Irish challenge at Leopard Creek. Both are on seven-under par, four shots behind Sweden's Oskar Henningsson and England's Robert Rock and American Len Mattiace.
Caldwell, McIlroy's playing partner in last year's Walker Cup at Royal County Down, made a fine impression at the outset of his fledgling professional career. Starting at the 10th, he raced to within four shots of the lead after a round of 67.
McGrane, who captured a first European title at the China Open earlier in the year, came home in 66 to join Caldwell at seven-under.
Gareth Maybin (three-under) will also be in action over the weekend but Michael Hoey (one-over) and Gary Murphy (five-over) join McIlroy in making early exits.
Rock picked up five shots in the last six holes to surge into a share of the lead. Rock fired a five-under-par 67 to set the early pace in the clubhouse on 11-under before being joined by Mattiace (68) and Henningsson (64).
The trio were one ahead of South African Richard Sterne (66).
Rock, chasing his maiden European Tour win, found his putting stroke on the back nine for the second day in a row.
"The front nine is tougher and I didn't play particularly well," he told reporters. "I three-putted the fifth and that took me back to level for the day and I was really going quite slowly at that point."
After the turn the 31-year-old Englishman rallied with three consecutive birdies from the 13th before closing with back-to-back birdies, narrowly missing a 10-foot eagle putt at the last.
