Golf:Just one of the Maguire twins, Leona, has been selected for the British and Irish Curtis Cup team against the United States later this year. Lisa Maguire, who was on the losing team alongside her sister two years ago, has only been named as first reserve for this year's renewal at Nairn Golf Club in Scotland.
Stephanie Meadow of Royal Portrush, currently ranked number 10 in the world, will make her first appearance in the event after being selected by an independent panel.
English teenager Charley Hull, the seventh-ranked woman amateur in the world, has been picked after all but Lauren Taylor, another rising star of the women’s game, has been left out because of doubts about her fitness. Hull was originally told she would not be selected because she did not attend last week’s trial.
But that decision has been overturned by the selection panel of the Ladies’ Golf Union and Hull, who preferred to go to the United States after being invited to this week’s Kraft Nabisco Championship, now has something to celebrate even before she plays her first major.
Only three of the eight-strong side — Holly Clyburn, Maguire and Pamela Pretswell — have Curtis Cup experience. They were in the team beaten 12.5 — 7.5 in Massachusetts two years ago.
