The Czech Republic has imposed a jinx on Irish hockey in recent times, notably at women's senior and junior level this summer. This morning, the Ireland under-21 men's team - whose predecessors lost A division status in Prague several years ago, are aiming to reverse fortunes when they take on the Czechs in the opening match of the European junior championship (B division) in Padova, Italy.

Having beaten two A division sides, Scotland and Belgium, in preparatory games, it seems that Ireland are well equipped - especially in attack - to gain promotion. The Czechs are expected to provide the toughest opposition in Pool B, with Wales (beaten 4-0 by an understrength Irish team two months ago) and Denmark of lesser calibre. The real test will be the crossover matches , probably against France and Italy from Pool A, which will decide the top three places overall. In training over the weekend, the Irish squad have found it extremely hot, but fortunately two of their matches this week are in the morning, with another in the evening. "We are all fired up and ready to go," said manager Herbie Sharman last night.

Pool A: Italy, France, Portugal, Gibralter; Pool B: Ireland, Czech Republic, Wales, Denmark.

Today: Ireland v Czech Republic (9.00 a.m.); France v Portugal; Wales v Denmark; Italy v Gibralter.
