Mountbellew took full advantage of home venue when they won the County Galway Trophy last week. First played in 1927, the same year as the inaugural Ryder Cup, the County Galway Trophy was contested by nine clubs this year with the home side edging out Gort by five points.

Played on a team of 10 with the best seven cards to count, Mountbellew totalled 475, Gort 480 and Tuam 482. Michael Cunningham recorded a superb 63 for the Gort team and also win the individual award. Gerry King from Tuam had a 65, while the best gross of the day was also recorded by Tuam's Thomas Niland with a 69. It was, however, consistency that decided the outcome and the home team got off to a great start with Johnny Costello returning a nett 66. Tom Cunningham, John O'Connor and Tom Carroll followed with 67s and despite late threats from Tuam and Gort, Mountbellew held out for their first victory in the competition in over 20 years.
