Late bogey denies Pádraig Harrington place at US Open

A bogey at the final hole on Walton Heath’s Old Course saw Pádraig Harrington miss out on qualifying for next month’s US Open.

The Dubliner sufficiently recovered from the shoulder injury that forced him out of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth to tee it up at the traditional US Open qualifying venue.

After a level par round of 72 on the New Course in the morning the three-time major winner fared better on the Old Course, carding a 68 that saw him narrowly miss out on a place at Chamber’s Bay next month.

After 12 holes of his second round and at only one under par Harrington didn’t look in with a chance of making it into the 11 places up for grabs. But the Dubliner managed to turn it around and four consecutive birdies from the 13th to the 16th saw him move to five under.

A par at the 17th meant that a birdie at the last would see him qualify while a par would force a playoff with four other players.

It wasn’t to be however as the world number 83 slumped to a bogey five to be left disappointed. However, after looking like he may miss this week’s Irish Open due to injury there are a lot of positives to be taken to Royal County Down.

Things didn't go much better for the other two Irish players in the field either as Castleknock's Peter Lawrie could only manage rounds of 71 and 72 to finish one under while Gareth Maybin followed a promising opening round of 70 with a 74 on the New Course to finish level par.
