JIM FURYK continued hid fine play of the last six months by shooting a six under par 66 under difficult conditions yesterday to lead the first round of the Freeport McDermott Classic in New Orelans.
Furyk, winner earlier this year of the Hawaiian Open, was a stroke ahead of New Zealand's Frank Nobilo, John Wilson and Paul Stankowski after the first tour of English Turn's layout. One stroke further back at 68 were defending champion Davis Love, Tom Watson and Scott McCarron.
A one hour delay due to frost at the start of the round meant that 12 players were left on the course and will have to complete the first round prior to the start of the second round this morning.
Conditions were cool and windy, but few in the field complained because the weather was a significant improvement over chilling gales that accompanied Wednesday's pro-am.
Furyk carded four birdies and a chip in eagle from 30 feet on the par five second hole in his bogey free round. "Things have been going my way for the last five or six months. I've been really playing well," he said.
