The Republic of Ireland's underage teams have had mixed fortunes in the draws for the UEFA under-19 and under-17 qualifying tournaments for 2004, made in Nyon yesterday.

The under-19s are in qualifying Group Six alongside Bulgaria, Lithuania and San Marino. The under-17s have a tougher task against Switzerland, Austria and Belarus. The qualifiers take place next autumn.

The winners and runners-up in each group make the second stage, with the third-placed team with the best record. At under-19 level they join seeds Spain, Czech Republic and Slovakia in seven four-team second round pools, with the winners joining hosts Switzerland in the finals in July 2004.

At under-17, the qualifiers join seeds Spain, England and Poland, with the winners of the seven four-team groups joining hosts France in the finals in May 2004.
