Drab draw at the Dell

WIMBLEDON moved up to fifth place in the FA Premiership table and Southampton remained second from bottom but there was little entertainment in this dull draw at the Dell. Few chances were created by either side, with any shots on view either high or well wide.

Matthew Le Tissier, apart from taking several corners, had one of those days best forgotten, though manager Graeme Souness must have been pleased with the Southampton defence.

Wimbledon badly missed midfield dynamos Vinnie Jones and Oyvindteonhardsen while strikers Efan Ekoku and Marcus Gayle were badly out of touch and were taken off during the second half.

Egil Ostenstad might have given Southampton the lead after 32 minutes when he received a good pass from Jason Dodd, but he blazed wide from close range. That was the only real first half chance and the match did not improve after the interval, though the home team made most of the running.

Alan Neilson had a good low shot deflected for a corner while at the other end Wimbledon had their only good chance after 68 minutes when Ekoku burst clear in a quick counter attack. But the striker delayed his shot.
