Last year's Super Bowl teams, the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers, continued their super starts by boosting their records to 4-0 on Sunday. Bubby Brister, who started for an injured John Elway, passed for two touchdowns and Terrell Davis rushed for 119 yards, including a 42-yard score, to lead the Broncos to a 3816 rout of the Washington Redskins (0-4).

"It's the first time in my career I have ever had this kind of talent on a team," said Brister, whose Broncos won their first game without Elway in nine years. Darrien Gordon returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, and Davis, who carried 21 times, raised his league-leading total to 489 yards.

At Carolina, Brett Favre tied his own team record with five touchdown passes, including three to Derrick Mayes, to offset three interceptions as the Green Bay Packers won a 37-30 shoot-out with the Panthers.

Favre, who completed 27 of 46 passes for 389 yards and recorded the third five-touchdown game of his career, also threw TDs to tight ends Mark Chmura and Tyrone Davis.

At Tennessee, the Jacksonville Jaguars knocked Oilers quarterback Steve McNair out of the game with a hip pointer, then shut down back-up Dave Krieg and used two fourth-quarter field goals by Mike Hollis to secure a 27-22 victory.

Mark Brunell threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns and rookie running back Fred Taylor notched his second straight 100-yard game for the Jaguars, who improved to 4-0.

At San Francisco, the 49ers scored on their first five possessions and improved to 3-0 with a 31-20 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Steve Young completed 28 of 40 passes for 387 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Jerry Rice, who finished with eight catches for 162 yards.

Rice set an NFL record by scoring his 26th and 27th career touchdowns against the Falcons, the most ever by one player against a single team. Marcus Allen had scored 26 against the San Diego Chargers.
