A unique classic triple crown might be off the agenda but Finsceal Beo can achieve her own piece of history by becoming just the second filly to add tomorrow's Boylesports Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh to the English version she won earlier in the month.
A devastating defeat of Arch Swing at Newmarket has set up Jim Bolger's star to follow in the footsteps of Attraction who completed the double three years ago.
If Finsceal Beo was coming to the Curragh directly, then she would be a heavy odds-on shot to do just that. But instead she comes here on the back of a defeat in the French Guineas at Longchamp when an attempt on a possible clean sweep of the major European mile filly classics only narrowly failed.
Bolger blamed rain-softened ground rather than a quick reappearance for that defeat and the trainer will be hoping that current expectations for good ground tomorrow come through.
"We're expecting up to 5mms of rain after racing on Saturday and possibly another 5mms on Sunday morning but it is very difficult to predict. If we got that much, it would turn the ground good," said the Curragh manager, Paul Hensey, said yesterday.
That will also be good news for the Arch Swing team and John Oxx's fast ground-loving filly should be a major threat again since she overcame a bad draw at Newmarket to run second.
Peeping Fawn has taken a while to break her maiden but was impressive at Naas last week and could run into a place behind the major players.
Good ground would also be good for last year's Irish Derby hero Dylan Thomas who returns to the Curragh for the Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup. His Prix d'Ispahan success last time out indicated that Dylan Thomas is a colt at the peak of his powers right now and he should prove extremely difficult to beat. Notnowcato and Nightime are the other Group One winners in the race but if Aidan O'Brien's star is to be shaken up it could be by the unbeaten and unexposed Danak who is tackling beyond a mile for the first time.
Michael Kinane and John Oxx may well have better luck in the Group Three Gallinule Stakes with Eyshal who was running on well at the end of the Tetrarch over seven furlongs and should be well suited by the step up in trip.
