Local authorities around the island of Ireland put their best foot forward for National Heritage Week 2022. Here are the winners

Carlow

Event: Memories of our School Days at Rathanna National School

About: Rathanna Irish Countrywomen’s Association and members of the community invited all to discuss their memories of Rathanna National School, which was founded in 1883 and closed in 1969, gathering photographic, written and oral information from past pupils.

Cavan

Event: In the Footprints of the Past

About: Through a visual display, poetry and music by Heather Brett and Marilyn Gaffney, Cavan County Heritage Office in association with Templeport Development Association, Jampa Ling Buddhist Centre, Killeshandra Tidy Towns and Drumlane History and Heritage Group celebrated the history of the Church of the Rath, Drumlane Abbey, and St Mogue’s Island’s contribution to life in Killeshandra.

Clare

Event: Walk and Talk on Shanakyle Bog

About: Shanakyle Bog Restoration Project, in partnership with Connecting Communities with Peatlands, organised a walk and talk on Shanakyle Bog, the first raised bog restoration and rewetting project carried out in the county.

Cork City

Event: Heritage Week Programme of Events

About: Walks organised by Douglas Tidy Towns included a look at how the district got its name, its historic textile industry, its biodiversity, river water quality and birding workshops, plus foraging with a herbalist and botanist.

Cork County

Event: Heritage Week Programme of Events

About: Eminent ecologist Ted Cook contributed to a series of walks, including one along the mature Beech Avenue leading to Fountainstown House in Cork and a guided wildlife tour along the Blackwater River.

Derry

Digital Project: Oh City, City on the Foyle

About: Derry City and Strabane District Council carried out a series of virtual tours, videos and exhibitions exploring the area, including an animation series explaining the city’s famous walls, ‘Oh City, City on the Foyle’.

Donegal

Event: Turas na dTithe Oidhreachta

About: Síle Uí Fhearraigh presented a tour of three local sites - Teach Mhicí Mhic Gabhann in Cloughaneely, Teach Mhuiris in Gweedore and Teach Niall Ó Domhnaill in the Rosses - that included Sven Habermann of Conservation Letterfrack presenting local craft demonstrations, music and more.

Dublin City

Event: Middle Ages to Middle Aisle – the Archaeology beneath Lidl, Aungier St

About: IAC Archaeology presented a supermarket tour showing the medieval Church of St Peter, a sunken house built by the Dublin descendants of the Vikings and the once-opulent Aungier Street Theatre, all preserved beneath the Lidl shop floor and storeroom, Dublin 2.

Dublin – Dún Laoghaire Rathdown

Event: Citizen Science River Workshop

About: Marley Grange Residents Association taught participants about aquatic life in the Little Dargle River, using pond nets to help understand the health of the river and what can be done to improve biodiversity.

Dublin - Fingal

Event: Heritage Week Howth

About: EIRE 6 Restoration Group led a walk and talk to promote awareness of this WW2 Neutrality sign, as well as the history, heritage and ecology of Howth Head.

Dublin - South Dublin

Event: St. Finian’s Medieval Church & Graveyard by Night

About: The Society for Old Lucan provided a tour of St. Finian’s medieval church and graveyard at night that included information about night time photography and a bat detector.

Galway County

Event: An Bhean Ghlúine

About: Skehana & District Heritage Group’s project introduced visitors to the women who were early 20th-century midwives though a short film, photographs and memorabilia.

Galway City

Event: Galway’s 1,000 Year History of Canal Building & Milling

About: Philip James led a walk and talk that covered Galway City’s history of canal building, milling and water-powered businesses.

Kerry

Event: Life in the Bogs

About: Kerry Biosphere led a family fun day in Cronin’s Yard in the MacGillycuddy Reeks to learn all about the native bogs, plants and animals in the region.

Kildare

Event: Scything Skills on Nicholastown Green

About: To promote the craft of scything, the Tidy Towns Biodiversity Action Plan and Kilcullen Community Action left areas of grass to grow over the summer to foster wildflowers.

Kilkenny

Event: Heritage Week Programme of Events

About: A series of events including a tour of St Canice’s Cathedral showing the methods by which historians and archaeologists uncover its mysteries.

Laois

Event: Famine Pot Project

About: Errill Tidy Towns erected a commemorative plaque and limestone seat on the 175th anniversary of the Great Famine near the former site of a soup kitchen.

Leitrim

Event: Ask about Archaeology

About: The Leitrim Sweathouse Project co-ordinator was on hand for people to come and talk about archaeology that might have gone unnoticed in the area and the items they have found.

Limerick

Event: Askeaton Ballysteen River and Estuary Community Workshops

About: Askeaton Ballysteen Community Council organised workshops exploring the water quality and biodiversity of the River Deel and the Shannon and Deel Estuary.

Longford

Event: Heritage Week Events Programme

About: Knights and Conquests Heritage Centre’s events included an afternoon learning about Norman people and the era of knights and conquests, with re-enactments on horseback and performances by living history groups. An event marking the centenary of the death of Michael Collins also took place.

Louth

Event: 70th Anniversary of the Closure of LNWR Railway in Greenore

About: The Greenore Railway Museum at Greenore Co-op marked the 70th anniversary of the closure of LNWR Railway in this unique Victorian Village.

Mayo

Event: Foraging Walk on Cross Strand

About: Louisburgh-Killeen Heritage encouraged participants to rediscover their inner ‘wild child’ with a foraging walk on Cross Strand, to create awareness around its natural botanicals that can be used in everyday life.

Meath

Event: Oral recording by Irish Life and Lore at Heritage Park and 7 Arch Bridge

About: At an event organised by Paul Kerr, folklorist Maurice O’Keeffe recorded aspects of oral history dealing with scythe cutting, hay making and use of hand implements, the Traveller community, traditional music and kitchen crafts.

Monaghan

Event: Creative Heritage Inspired by Nature and its Music

About: Irish Wildlife Trust Monaghan Branch and Local Authority Waters Programme’s event explored some of the many ways the sound of nature has influenced Irish creative culture.

Offaly

Event: Clara Music Literary Festival

About: Clara Heritage Society, supported by the Tidy Towns groups from Ballycumber, Pullough and Ferbane, brought together local community groups for a literary and music festival at Clara House.

Roscommon

Event: Idols and Unclean Things

About: One-day conference and photographic exhibition at the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre examining the Gortnacrannagh Figure, a recently discovered 1,600-year-old pagan sculpture cut from the split trunk of an oak tree.

Sligo

Event: Guided tours of Moygara Castle

About: A visit to historic Moygara Castle witnessed the ongoing conservation works started in 2021 under the Community Monuments Fund.

Tipperary

Event: Programme of Events for Heritage Week

About: Tipperary Town Revitalisation Heritage Group and the Museum of Childhood Ireland’s project aimed to capture the voice of young people as they explore their role in revitalising their historic town centre.

Waterford

Event: Programme of Events for Heritage Week

About: A series of walks included one led by geologist Robbie Galvin to Tra na mBó, part of the Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark, to learn about its geological story.

Westmeath

Event: Guided tours of Cloncrow Raised Bog and Tyrellspass Village

About: Voluntary community group Everything Tyrrellspass Has, On Show (ETHOS) organised a walk and talk with ecologist George Smith to highlight the importance of conserving this unique habitat and the historic village of Tyrrellspass.

Wexford

Event: Castletown River and Nature Festival

About: Ahare River and Biodiversity Development Group organised a festival that included a moth monitoring workshop, talks and a family fun day treasure hunt.

Wicklow

Event: The Story of Castlekevin

About: Roundwood and District Historical Society received Community Monuments Funding in 2022 to prepare a conservation plan for Castlekevin, Annamoe, Co Wicklow, an Anglo-Norman castle.
