Theresa May’s Brexit speech

Sir, – Single market? Out. Customs union? Out. Free movement of peoples? Out.

When did we hear such a refrain before? Mrs Thatcher on Irish issues. – Yours, etc,

JOHN HYNES,

Greystones,

Co Wicklow.

Sir, – Theresa May is a politician of rare sincerity, courage, determination and skill. I do not doubt that she is a formidable negotiator. I take her at her word that Britain has no wish to weaken the European Union. Yet I fear she has been given the task of doing the impossible in aiming to resolve the unholy mess that is Brexit.

Her exhortation to the British people, divided as rarely before, to “come together” was no doubt heartfelt. But surely nobody can put Humpty Dumpty together again. – Yours, etc,

MARY BYRNE,

Bray, Co Wicklow.

Sir, – The only real question is which will collapse first, the EU or the UK? – Yours, etc,

M O’DONNELL,

Portobello, Dublin 8.

Sir, – A lot undone, a lot more to undo. – Yours, etc,

MARK RYAN,

Dublin 3.
