Madam, - Just when you feel that nobody else cares, when you are about to succumb and accept the world as it is, when you begin to wonder if you are the one out of step, along comes a voice that lifts you.

They give Oscars to film-makers for outstanding work; they give Man Booker and other prizes for great novels. Fintan O'Toole deserves something for his exquisite article on the gombeenism that controls Fianna Fáil (Opinion, January 22nd). His analysis is succinct, and beautifully written. And Martin Turner's cartoon on the same page, of Bertie being cross-examined by the Revenue, is poignant.

The tragedy may be that the Greens, in their dogged determination to stay in power, will become tainted with the mentality that brands any questioning the leader's past financial escapades as treason. - Yours, etc,
