'THE UNIVERSE IN A NUTSHELL'

JOSEPH HACKETT,

JOSEPH HACKETT,

Sir, - I have very little specialist knowledge of astrophysics but am fascinated by it.

I was astounded by Father Thomas Kelleher's intemperate outburst (January 22nd) against Stephen Hawking's wonderful book The Universe in a Nutshell. Part of its wonder is that it provides fact-based information on the current knowledge of our place in the real universe and insights into the continuing research that may explain more of nature's mysteries. That it can cover this immense subject in 216 pages at a price of only €32.25 is another wonder.

Much of the book is beyond my intelligence but each re-reading opens my mind a little further. May I suggest that Fr Kelleher try to clear his mind of the old "ologies" that have confused mankind for thousands of years and read the book again? He may then see it as a search for truth written with humility and humour. - Yours, etc.,
