Madam, - What has the European Union got in common with Irish discos for 11- to 18-year-olds? Answer: both are inducing social decay. Both encourage loveless irresponsibility. Both reduce the chance of genuine happiness by undermining virtue. Both encourage freedom without boundaries. Both aim at modernity without moral values.

The disco seems to be a rite of passage. Adult unawareness and peer pressure allow children to be hauled out of childhood and dropped into a fomenting sea of emotional pressure for which they are pathetically unprepared.

As with the EU, the average adult doesn't know the half of what is going on. In both cases it is high time that caring people check out what is happening and say a clear "No" to the losing of the soul of Europe. - Yours, etc,
