Swearing in public

Sir, – It was heartening to read that Waterford council has introduced byelaws prohibiting swearing in its parks (June 24th).

Foul language has become epidemic in Irish society. Recently while donating blood, the nurse attending me was cursing like a drunken sailor. While visiting my father in a geriatric ward in hospital, a group of pensioners were “f-ing” and blinding to beat the band, while other patients tried to sleep.

Foul language is like graffiti; it was once confined to certain areas but now it is everywhere. Most distressing is when parents use foul language to scold young children.
