STUDENTS WITHOUT VOTES

Sir, Is it not outrageous that as many as half the students in Dublin in rented accommodation will be disenfranchised on June 6th? The calling of an election during exam time has denied them the opportunity to cast their ballot at home, and the arbitrary date of September 12th, 1996 was chosen for them to reregister their votes from their home constituencies to their Dublin addresses. There was no recognition of the fact that students studying in Dublin would not have finalised their living arrangements until at least October. When the low turnout of the 18-25 year old bracket is analysed, perhaps the commentators will recognise that it is not simply the apathy of the young that causes low turn out, but the bureaucratic incompetence which has denied thousands of young people their democratic right. Yours, etc.,
