Sir, Canon Pierpont expressed "upset . . . that people could not leave the dead in peace". The desecration of these vaults is a heinous act which I deplore, but I have long questioned the moral issue of having some of these vaults and their mummified inhabitants on view to the public. The age, condition or historic significance of the people buried here shouldn't alter how we treat the dead.
I agree with the Canon. "Leave the dead in peace". But in order to do this, the vaults should be closed to the public and the dead should not be reduced to a tourist attraction however respectfully it is done. Yours, etc., Farney Park, Sandymount, Dublin 4.
