Sir, - I share the misgivings of your erudite and entertaining columnist Brendan McWilliams (Weather Eye, October 5th) concerning RTE plans to replace Met Eireann presenters of the weather forecasts on television by non-meteorologist presenters.
The Met Eireann presenters are professionals who know their job and understand in depth what they are talking about - they do not "read" the forecasts. Their would-be successors would read from a script prepared by professionals, lacking the technical and scientific knowledge necessary for the compilation of the script. This, I believe, would detract from the sincerity and quality of their message. They could possibly be more interested in how they as presenters appear to their viewers!
Maybe RTE should heed the very sound advice given by a Latin writer many years ago: Ne sutor ultra crepidam. For the benefit of your readers who had not the good fortune to study Latin: The cobbler should stick to his last. - Yours, etc., Alf Rhatigan,
