Role of women in the Church

Madam, - I read with interest the letters about the role of women in the Roman Catholic Church. I have much sympathy for those women who feel frustrated that their church won't recognise their calling to various ministries in the same way that men are.

I look forward to the day when the Roman Catholic Church acknowledges that God calls women, as he does men, to all forms of ministry.

Until such a time I would like to suggest that the women who feel called by God to serve him in a way that the Roman Catholic Church does not permit go and find a church or another community of faith which does recognise their calling. The gifts God bestows on his people to serve him are far too important to remain unused.

And let me be clear. Even though I am a Methodist I am not proselytising. This is the advice I would give anyone who felt that their church, whatever the denomination, was obstructing their call and ability to serve God.

Remember, denominations are man-made. Christians are first and foremost called to serve God and to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ and build up his Kingdom, for that alone is what will survive. - Yours, etc.,
