Republic and Covid certificate

Sir, – I was pleased to receive recently, by email, my digital Covid certificate, confirming that I had been vaccinated against the virus.

However, I was surprised to see that the certificate is headed “Republic of Ireland”, above the harp symbol.

I always understood that – as stated in Article 4 of our Constitution – the name of the State is “Eire, or in the English language, Ireland”.

While the certificate later shows the name of the (European Union) member state in which the vaccine was administered as “Ireland”, the reference to “Republic of Ireland” appears mistaken.

– Yours, etc,

TIM O’LEARY,

Redcross,

Co Wicklow.
