Sir, - I like Frank McNally's suggestion (Weekend, June 24th) of rebuilding Trinity College elsewhere, to give cars, lorries and buses the freedom to hurtle around the centre of Dublin unimpeded.
Why don't we do the same thing with Westport? Mayo County Council has plans for a brand new road, quite separate from the existing N5, to enable cars, HGVs and coaches to rush ever faster towards the bottleneck that is Westport.
Now, if Westport, which is busy being torn down and rebuilt anyway, could be rebuilt somewhere else, those impatient vehicles could drive straight through and into the sea, without let or hindrance, like so many lemmings. Splash!
Or is it conceivable that we will do something about the volume and speed of the traffic on our roads? - Yours, etc.,
Shirley L. Piggins, Corratowick, Westport, Co Mayo.
