Sir, - It is with great concern that we note that the levels of Technetium 99 (half life 210,000 years), released from Sellafield, have been reported at levels in lobsters 13 times higher than the intervention levels laid down by an EC directive in 1989 for intervention in radioactivity in food stuff, following a nuclear accident. Radioactive doses to local seafood consumers have been rising steeply since BNFL commissioned a new, enhanced actinide removal plant in 1994.

We call for more intensive monitoring of the health status of Irish people from the discharges from Sellafield. Every effort must be made to support the application by the STAD group against its operations. Sellafield is a growing danger to public health, which must be closed in the interests of our children's health and our own. - Yours, etc.,
