Madam, - Before the last general election, the Government announced 2,600 jobs in four locations: Cardinal Health in Longford, Thompson Netg in Limerick, Elan in Macroom, and Churchill Insurance in Galway. With the exception of 130 jobs in Galway none of the jobs has materialised. This was all part of a well-designed election campaign to convince the electorate of our economic health.

The reality now is sadly different. In the case of Thompson Netg, not only did we not get the extra jobs promised but we lost the existing 200 when the business relocated to a lower-cost country. Ireland is no longer an attractive location for manufacturing companies. High employment taxes and high operating costs have eroded our competitiveness. So be warned. Any major job announcements in advance of the local and European elections on June 11th can be filed as fiction, under the heading of election propaganda. - Yours, etc.,
