Preparing for G8 summit

Sir, – Martin Ford’s letter (June 14th) is somewhat blinkered and betrays a very short-term view on the G8 summit.

It is common practice for neighbouring friendly countries to help each other out in security matters concerning events of global importance, as the G8 summit most certainly, is and we are indeed grateful to the support that the Irish Government and An Garda Síochána is providing.

Many hotels and other businesses in counties Donegal, Sligo and Cavan are reaping immediate financial benefit with delegates being based in the Republic for the duration of the summit. In the longer term, the summit will bring worldwide attention to this beautiful corner of north west Ireland and will undoubtedly lead to it becoming an ever more popular international tourism destination. – Yours, etc,

THE LORD DUNLEATH
