Sir, – Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar has launched a new bus service between Limerick and Galway; to be operated by Expressway, Bus Éireann’s “profitable” division that lost €17million in the past three years.

This service will further damage the new rail link between the two cities that cost €110 million to build, with losses of more than €2 million per year. No matter who wins in this little contest, it is clear that the taxpayer will pick up the tab.

Meanwhile, two private bus companies run regular and reliable services between the two cities, without a cent of taxpayers’ money.

Instead of launching new services by the CIÉ companies, shouldn’t Mr Varadkar bring an end to this outdated and unethical waste of taxpayers’ money? – Yours, etc,
