Madam, - While driving through Avondale Road, Killiney, Co Dublin on Wednesday morning I was puzzled to see that all the wheelie bins were neatly placed right on the bicycle paths, thus forcing cyclists to swerve, slalom-like, on to the roadway every few metres.
The mystery of what seemed a peculiar and if dangerous local custom was quickly solved. Halfway down the road I saw the weekly rubbish collectors were taking bins from the pathways outside the houses, relieving them of their contents and then placing them, not back where they got them, but on the bicycle path, in direct defiance of the Dún Laoghaire/Rathdown Council's entreaties not to cause such obstruction.
Can this really be Ireland in the 21st century or am I missing something here? - Yours, etc,
MICHAEL CASEY, Johnstown Road, Cabinteely, Dublin 18.
