Madam, – The responsible officials of the Department of Justice may not be thinking about changing the clocks (Home News, October 29th) but if they don’t, Ireland could find itself in splendid isolation from its neighbours, at least temporally. A bill to bring the UK into line with Central European Time will be presented to the UK parliament in December, and this time, it has a real prospect of success.

The Lighter Later campaign in the UK has successfully lobbied for support, and with strong evidence backing the benefits, even organisations such as the National Farmers’ Union no longer oppose the change. Even in Scotland, a majority now support it.

If Ireland ignores the opportunity, or chooses to go it alone, then we can look forward to having to change the time on every crossing of the Border.

Madam, – Once again people are bemoaning the fact that our clocks are due to be changed by one hour. Surely this is not the time for the debate, given that it is so close to the event? This discussion needs to take place earlier in the year to find a consensus on what is best for the country. Leaving it to the 11th hour (or is it the 12th, I never know) serves no purpose. – Yours, etc,
